About Parallax

The story of Parallax Press

Founded in 1986, following a suggestion by Vietnamese Zen teacher and poet Thich Nhat Hanh, Parallax Press is the publishing division of Unified Buddhist Church, Inc., dedicated to publishing books and tapes on socially engaged Buddhism. We are Thich Nhat Hanh's core publisher and carry all books published by him. In addition, Parallax publishes books by Robert Aitken, Stephen Batchelor, Maha Ghosananda, Sister Chan Khong, H.H. the Dalai Lama, Joanna Macy, Sulak Sivaraksa, Mitsu Suzuki, Ko-Un, Gary Gach, Alan Hunt Badiner, John Malkin, Hilda Gutiérrez Baldoquín, Catherine Ingram, Victoria Jean Dimidijan, Claude Whitmyer, and many others.

We are committed to making these teachings accessible to everyone and preserving them for future generations.

About our name

"Parallax" is derived from the Greek word meaning "to change." It describes the "apparent change in an object based on the actual change in the position of the subject." In other words, when you change the way you look at things, they appear differently. This word conveys one of the deepest meaning of Buddhism using a word of Western origin.

Our staff

Parallax Press has a small staff that works together as a sangha, an intentional community. We are dedicated to creating a workplace Our staffthat mirrors the ideals of mindfulness and interbeing in our books. In doing so, we hope to create a more peaceful and pleasant place to work as well as model a different way of doing business. For those interested in learning more, we recommend the Parallax title Mindfulness and Meaningful Work.

Volunteering, Internships, and Jobs

Volunteering

As a nonprofit organization, Parallax Press relies on the help of volunteers in fulfilling its mission to promote engaged Buddhism throughout the world. We offer volunteers an opportunity to participate in the practice of mindfulness in the workplace. Volunteer opportunities can range from regular or occasional help in our office to temporary help during busy times. While we encourage volunteers to offer whatever amount of time they have available, those who can commit themselves to a set number of hours on a regular basis are particularly helpful. For more information about current volunteer opportunities or if you would like to volunteer, please email Travis Masch at travism [at] parallax.org.

Internships

Parallax Press offers its internship program as a learning experience, providing exposure to new tasks and skills. Internships are customized to meet the needs of an intern, while at the same time general enough to thoroughly introduce all aspects of book publishing, including editorial tasks, publicity, accounting, mailing list maintenance, and fulfillment. Students interested in quarter- or semester-long internships are encouraged to apply. Internships are unpaid and the length of the internship is negotiable.
