Opening the Heart of Compassion

Anh-Huong Nguyen

The function of meditation practice is to heal and transform. As we learn to breathe mindfully, our minds stop wandering into the past or worrying about the future. Through singing and guided meditation, Anh-Huong Nguyen, a dharma teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, helps us touch and water the seeds of peace, joy and compassion in ourselves and in the people around us.

Anh-Huong Nguyen is a senior teacher of the Mindfulness Practice Center of Fairfax in Northern Virginia. She began studies with Thich Nhat Hanh in 1980, and has taught mindfulness practices through workshops and retreats across the United States since 1988. In 1992, Anh-Huong and her husband, Thu Nguyen, were among the first students to be ordained as dharma teachers by Thich Nhat Hanh.

As Vietnamese boat refugees, Anh-Huong and her family came to the United States in 1979 when she was 18. A year later, she founded the Committee for the Relief of Poor Children in Vietnam (www.crpcv.org), a non-profit organization that helps to provide food, shelter, and schooling for orphans and poor children in Vietnam. As the desire to relieve suffering continued to grow in her heart, she stopped working as a biochemist in 1993 and began sharing full-time the art of mindful living. Anh-Huong, Thu and their 10-year old son live in Oakton, Virginia, sharing the practice as a family.
