August 2006 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter. I hope that you are enjoying summer. I like to envision some of you sitting on your porch with you feet submerged in a tub of cold water surrounded by the joyful sounds of summer like children laughing, crickets singing, and the distant melodies of the ice cream truck making the rounds in your neighborhood. This newsletter will therefore be seasonably short.

Although summer is traditionally a time of more relaxation, it's impossible to ignore that on the international front, fierce wars continue to be fought with ingrained patterns of misunderstanding and subsequent aggression.

Two titles offer a more mindful perspective of these conflicts Mindful Politics, A Buddhist Guide to Making the World A Better Place from our good friends at Wisdom Publications and our own Peace Begins Here by Thich Nhat Hanh. Both titles are available and featured on our website this month.

We are very pleased to offer recipients of this newsletter the special offers below. If you do not want to receive further mailings from Parallax Press, unsubscribe now scrolling to the bottom of this email and clicking on the unsubscribe link.

Transformation & Healing: Sutra on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness, Rev. Ed.

Special order the newly revised edition of Transformation & Healing, prior to the official Oct. 1st release date! Parallax Press is pleased to offer the new edition to our customers before it is in the bookstores.

Transformation & Healing presents one of the Buddha's most fundamental teachings and the foundation of all mindfulness practice. The Sutra on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness has been studied, practiced, and handed down with special care from generation to generation for 2500 years. This sutra teaches us how to deal with anger and jealousy, to nurture the best qualities in our children, spouses, and friends, and to greet death with compassion and equanimity.

"If you were to posses only one book on how to fare through this human existence with joy and self-knowledge, it should be this text." Karuna Magazine

Peace Begins Here: Palestinians and Israelis Listening to Each Other

Peace Begins Here is rich with stories from Israelis and Palestinians, as well as examples from Thich Nhat Hanh's life, including his experience with non-violent action during the war in Vietnam and its aftermath. Highlights include personal stories from participants in the peace retreats and Thich Nhat Hanh's collected practices for peace, including deep listening, deep relaxation, mindful walking, mindful eating, and loving speech.

"Speaking to Israelis and Palestinians, Thich Nhat Hanh speaks also to us. His words and practices are true seeds of peace, gathered from a great teacher's deep experience. May each seed blossom as a lotus in every sea of fire." Hozan Alan Senauke

Long Road Turns To Joy, Thich Nhat Hanh

Here is little book that provides a practical and inspirational introduction to walking meditation. Thich Nhat Hanh teaches us to "walk not in order to arrive, walk just for walking."

We suggest to begin the practice by mindfully walking in the direction of an ice cream store, if the ice cream truck does not visit your neighborhood.
