From the Editors

We’ve had a wonderful spring and summer, traveling to four countries in Asia with Thich Nhat Hanh, Sister Chan Khong, and the Western monks and nuns of Plum Village. A very full account of this trip begins on page 20. We’re also continuing to search for property for a residential retreat center in Virginia, while, at the same time, preparing for Thich Nhat Hanh’s visit to the U.S. this fall, including a lecture and a Day of Mindfulness at the State of the World Forum in San Francisco, organized by the Gorbachev Foundation/USA.

We've had a wonderful spring and summer, traveling to four countries in Asia with Thich Nhat Hanh, Sister Chan Khong, and the Western monks and nuns of Plum Village. A very full account of this trip begins on page 20. We're also continuing to search for property for a residential retreat center in Virginia, while, at the same time, preparing for Thich Nhat Hanh's visit to the U.S. this fall, including a lecture and a Day of Mindfulness at the State of the World Forum in San Francisco, organized by the Gorbachev Foundation/USA. And we are pleased to announce that Riverhead Books, a division of Putnam Publishing in New York, has made Thich Nhat Hanh's Living Buddha, Living Christ their lead fall title. In this issue, we continue to present Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching on the Noble Eightfold Path. Joan Halifax, Svein Myreng, Patricia Dai-En Bennage, Katharine Cook, and others share accounts of their own good work, and Therese Fitzgerald shares the comings and goings of Thay's recent trip to Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and China.

We hope you enjoy this issue of The Mindfulness Bell, and we look forward to seeing many of you at Thich Nhat Hanh's retreats and lectures this fall.

—Arnie Kotler, Therese Fitzgerald, and Ellen Peskin
