Poem: I Am

There is light.
There is shadow.
I walk in both.
Once, I fed five thousand
with a handful of loaves and fishes;
Once again, I wrenched the gold fillings
from the teeth of the stacked dead
at Auschwitz.
Both times, it was me.
It was me, and I am not
damned
unless I deny either.
Light.
Shadow.
Both are me.
I am.
