Welcome Letter

Following Thầy’s passing and funeral ceremony in 2022, we collectively honored his life and continuation body with the traditional Vietnamese and East Asian Ten Ceremonies.1 In the West, one hundred years marks the moment when we stop and reflect on the life of a great person or event. In this issue, we mark the 100th birthday of our Teacher—born October 11, 1926—with new reflections on his life and impact. How does each of us continue the actions of Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh?

Following Thầy’s passing and funeral ceremony in 2022, we collectively honored his life and continuation body with the traditional Vietnamese and East Asian Ten Ceremonies.1 In the West, one hundred years marks the moment when we stop and reflect on the life of a great person or event. In this issue, we mark the 100th birthday of our Teacher—born October 11, 1926—with new reflections on his life and impact. How does each of us continue the actions of Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh?

Thầy’s presence is required in every part of the world to continue the great work of building communities of resistance to rampant consumerism, to the tendency to cede our agency to virtual AI agents, to the volatility of political views, and to the continuing destruction of biodiversity and exacerbation of the climate crisis—all of which threaten the well-being of future generations on this planet. This issue invites us all to continue the work of removing our idea that we are separate from Thầy and the ancestral teachers and go deeper into how we are realizing and applying the Buddhadharma in a living way—what Thầy called evolutive Dharma.

Let the words on these pages come alive for you in your life and in your practice, for the benefit of all living beings and our green-mantled Mother Earth.
